Wholesale Pulses Sourcing Guide: Lentils, Chickpeas & Dry Beans
How to source bulk lentils, chickpeas and dry beans: grading, moisture, defects, packaging, fumigation and shipping checks for professional wholesale buyers.
Pulses such as lentils, chickpeas and dry beans are shelf-stable, widely traded and easy to ship in volume, which makes them a staple of wholesale food buying. They are also an agricultural product with natural variation, so the difference between a smooth order and a rejected container usually comes down to how clearly the specification was written. This guide covers what professional buyers should define before they commit.
Define the product precisely
"Lentils" or "chickpeas" is not a specification. Name the type (for example red split lentils, green lentils, kabuli or desi chickpeas, or the specific bean variety), the crop year, the origin and the size or grade. Chickpeas in particular are traded by size, usually described by the number of grains per unit weight or by a sieve size, so agree the measurement method in writing rather than relying on a market nickname.
Set quality parameters you can test
Ask the supplier for a written specification and agree limits on the points that matter for your use. Typical parameters include:
- Moisture: excess moisture invites mould and insect activity during storage and transit.
- Foreign matter and defects: stones, husks, broken, split, discoloured or damaged grains.
- Purity and uniformity: mixing of varieties or colours, and consistency of size.
- Cooking quality: for some buyers, cooking time and texture are as important as appearance.
Tie each limit to a test method or an independent inspection so disputes can be settled with data rather than opinion.
Insist on a pre-shipment sample
Approve a representative sample before shipment and keep a sealed counter-sample. Where possible, have an independent inspection company draw samples at loading and compare them with the agreed specification. This is inexpensive compared with the cost of a rejected shipment.
Plan for pests, fumigation and plant-health paperwork
Dry pulses can carry storage insects, so many importing countries require a phytosanitary certificate and may have specific fumigation or treatment rules. Requirements differ by destination, so confirm them with your customs broker or the plant-health authority in your market before the goods are booked. Ask the supplier to state any fumigation performed and to supply the related documents.
Choose packaging and loading carefully
Pulses are commonly shipped in woven polypropylene or paper bags, or in bulk liners inside containers. Bags make handling and partial deliveries easier; bulk liners can lower packing cost but need suitable unloading facilities. Because moisture migrating inside a closed container can cause condensation, ask how the supplier manages ventilation, liner use and desiccants on long sea routes.
Agree commercial terms and documents early
Confirm the minimum order quantity, tolerance on weight, price basis and payment method before the order is placed. Choosing the right trade term also decides who carries the risk at each stage, which is covered in our guide to Incoterms for wholesale food buyers. Typical documents include the commercial invoice, packing list, bill of lading, certificate of origin, phytosanitary certificate and a certificate of analysis. Before you finalise a new source, run through the steps in how to qualify a wholesale food supplier.
